4 Uncommon Study Abroad Adventures

By Kylie Exline on September 11, 2016

Regardless of whether you have studied abroad or not, it seems like more and more students opt for that learning experience every year, as opposed to strictly staying on campus for the duration of college.

We have heard of the popular countries and cities that students and faculty pay visit to annually, but what about those uncommon places that are not quite on the “study abroad” map yet?

To discover the secluded and mysterious countries (maybe even continents entirely), continue reading below.

**Warning: you may be ready to pack a bag and secure a passport immediately after reading.**

Antarctica

When you think of this southern foreign land, I presume you promptly envision snow and lots of it, ginormous icebergs, and sans people. Well, though that is mainly correct, there is also more to this super cold trip.

Of course if you are visiting the South Pole, you may need to bring a few extra warm coats, plus some (a lot of) Vaseline. A lot of your time will be spent outside (clearly), and on excursions. There is whale watching, kayaking, camping, polar plunging (which is exactly what it sounds like), and studying the environment encompassing you. You should definitely never be bored.

Antarctica is a great place to study abroad in because it is honestly a once in a lifetime opportunity, Plus, there are penguins, and that should be more than enough to coerce you. There are various universities that offer the trip, as well as international programs that are willing to pay for you. Free is almost always worth it, academically.

Chile

This country is one of the longest, most narrow places in the world, and has more to offer than just Easter Island, which is beautiful and enriching. Chile has the driest place on earth (The Atacama Desert), and the world’s biggest swimming pool (Algarroba City). So pretty cool sightseeing opportunities already.

If you have a love for kayaking, then Chile should be your destination. People tend to kayak literally everywhere when checking out their surroundings, and you will get a good glimpse on how you would survive in the wild. Sounds like a grand ole time to me.

There are specific universities that offer the study abroad program, however Chile is definitely rarer of a chance than other well-known areas, such as Florence or Spain. If booking your trip here, you should prepare to learn about its capital, Santiago, its overall culture, and did I mention kayaking is huge there?

Kenya

Our knowledge of Kenya most likely mirrors on the fact that it is a country in Africa, and has quite a few savannas. Though not wrong, there is more to see in this vast land. For one, African wildlife and its preservation is a huge facet of the country, and highlights the need for developed change.

If you are desiring a study abroad trip where you leave inspired and motivated, then I would highly recommend this east coast country. Plus, there is a deep respect for cultures here, such as the Iraqw and Maasai cultures, which allows you to personally witness the musical ceremonies, spear throwing, and of course rural settlements.

Their food is an adventure in itself, and who does not want to go on multiple safaris? Exactly, everyone wants to experience that firsthand. Although Kenya is not a top 10 study abroad trip, you will definitely have an amazing trip and really learn outside of the classroom.

The world at sea

Though this may sound slightly unrealistic, I promise it is real. It is only offered with certain programs, but it is readily available to anyone willing to spend a semester at sea. You visit various countries, all while living on a boat. Sounds amazing, but just remember to bring some nausea medicine.

All you need are some visas and your passport, plus the money to pay for the trip obviously, and you should be good to go. This study abroad opportunity literally lets you sail from country to country, and gives a whole new meaning to traveling the world.

You will receive firsthand looks into various cultures, tons of water, and experiences that only few ever encounter. Plus, your tan will be A1 once you hit your homeland again.

Studying abroad carries a connotation that makes students believe they only have a few existing options. However, there are varied areas awaiting to be traveled on, and diverse people to meet.

It is interesting to visit a place that you have heard random facts about, and then to see for yourself the evident truths. With all of these countries and cities, you will not only be leaving with memories and an experience, but the vision that we are all different yet relatable, and are all hungry to be immersed in culture.
