By Ashley Paskill on September 28, 2017

Temple is known for being a liberal campus. It is also very diverse, with students attending from all over the United States and the world and representing multiple religions, genders, sexualities, and other forms of diversity. Philadelphia, as a whole, is a liberal city. City Hall even raised a transgender flag outside City Hall in solidarity with the transgender community.

Starting Monday, October 2, 2017, and running through Friday, October 6, Temple Institutional Diversity, Equity, Advocacy, and Leadership (IDEAL) is hosting events for Temple’s 9th annual National Coming Out Week in support of the LGBTQIA+ community on campus and elsewhere. The theme of this year’s NCOW is Solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ Community. Events are open to students, faculty, staff, and alumni.

The week kicks off at noon on Monday with the NCOW Launch event. The event will be held at IDEAL’s offices at 2026 N Broad St, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19121 from 12-2 p.m. The launch event will feature free promotional items for those in attendance. The 6th annual Drag Show will be held on Monday from 6:30-9 at 1837 N Broad St, Philadelphia, PA 19122. According to the Facebook event, the purpose of the Drag Show is to create “an empowering space where individuals express gender fluidity in a creative and artistic way.”

On Wednesday, October 4 from 7-9 p.m., Student Center Underground will host the Come Out, Speak Out event. The purpose of the event is for participants to share their stories about coming out with students and other members of the Temple community to empower them. The event is a safe place to share their experience in a way that will inspire others in attendance.

On Thursday, October 5 from 12-1:30 p.m., Temple’s career services is hosting a Queer Lunch: Queering Professional in the Burrow (2026 N Broad Street). The event will talk about navigating ways to make the workforce more inclusive of gender and sexuality. A Town Hall will also be held on Thursday from 6-7:30 p.m. in the Student Center room 200AB. The event consists of a conversation with the University and the city of Philadelphia. City officials will be on hand to discuss the state of inclusion for the LGBTQIA+ community within the city.

The week concludes with NCOW Fest on Friday from 11:30-1:30 at 13 street between Montgomery and Polett Walk. The event will be a place where members of the LGBTQIA+ community on campus to connect with LGBTQIA+ resources on campus and within the city of  Philadelphia.
